Walleye
WALLEYE:
Walleyes get their name from their large glassy marble like eyes which are very sensitive to light. This is why Walleye fishing is usually better on cloudy days, early morning and late evening. They have a large dorsal fin which is ribbed with stiff, sharp spines. Take care. these can hurt!
The average size of Walleye found in Mirond Lake is 2 – 3 lbs with the largest expected catch to be approximately 8 lbs. It takes many years for walleye to grow this big so think about “taking a picture” and letting it go. The cold water also limits the size of these fish.
There are many ways to fish for Walleye. Jigs can be tipped with night crawlers, frozen minnows or leeches. Twister tails, rapalas and small spoons can also be used. Bottom bouncing with spinner rigs or the use of slip bobbing works well. Light weight rods and 4 – 8 lb test line gives walleye fishermen the ultimate feel.
