The Best Fish in Mirond Lake

Walleye

Walleye get their name from their marble like, milky eyes, which are very sensitive to light. They are also sometimes known as pickerel and are the provincial fish of Saskatchewan. Walleye vary in colour, but are usually a golden green. They tend to be brassy with spots or smears of black. They have a large dorsal fin with spikes – so be careful as these can hurt! In North America, walleye are a prized catch, with some trophies being as large as 8lbs. Their average weight is around 2-5lbs.

This delicious fish is known for its flavour. It prefers the deeper waters, and can be found in the sandy areas of Mirond Lake and in the protection of rocks. Due to their sensitive eyes, you are more likely to catch one on cloudy days, late morning or early evening. If you’re hoping to catch a walleye, have no fear because they are easily hooked on light tackle. Jigs, live-bait or jiggling spoons are all perfect options for catching this fish. However, they do take the bait slowly so be patient, you may lose them if you are too eager.

Northern Pike

If you’re looking for a larger fish, you can find it at Newmart Resort by catching Northern Pike. They are usually about 3-6lbs but a trophy can easily be above 10lbs. Northern pike are also known as jack or jackfish and are a popular option in Saskatchewan lakes and rivers as they can be quite thrilling to catch. Mirond Lake is the perfect location to use your in line spinners, crank baits or spoons to lure in one of these massive beauties, but don’t be afraid to experiment with different bait to lead them out of weed beds where they are typically found.

These fish can be found in the shallower waters, this is especially true for seaweed filled areas. Spring and fall are the best time to catch these fish, but if you really want an adventure northern pike are great for ice fishing! This once in a lifetime experience is perfect to have at Newmart Resort, where our cabins have a fire pit to warm up by and grill at. If you’re looking to go on a trip with a group, the Big Pike Package allows you to share the experience with family and friends for 5 days and 6 nights!
